Now that there’s a burgeoning segment of the population that works from the home, the need for a dedicated home office has been created, and more and more office furniture are finding their way inside the house.
One of the most important home office furniture is the file cabinet. Most of the filing you may do these days is done by mouse clicks and keystrokes, but no matter how much you and other companies strive for paperless offices, there will probably always be a need for tangible, touchable, rustling documents. And as long as that remains true, there will always be a need for a place to store them in; there will always be a need for file cabinets.
There are file cabinets that are made of wood, and there are those that are made of sheet metal. Of course you can always opt for file cabinets that are made from sheets of metal, but why bring such cold, unwelcoming pieces into your home? Wood file cabinets are much better suited for the home office because wood naturally has a warmth and coziness that other materials don’t have.
A couple of things to keep in mind when shopping for your wood file cabinets: First, check your measurements to make sure that you know just how much space you have for it. Second, know what size of paper are the documents to be stored — usually A4 or letter size. In the countries where A4 is the standard document size, the file cabinets are designed for that paper size, and so it goes for places where letter size is the usual size.
Also, think about what kind of finishing you want for your wood file cabinet. Check out pieces that are finished with stains — notice how the wood grain is played up. See how you like that. There are also lacquer type finishes that coat the wood with a smooth, shiny sheen, which gives the piece an elegant quality. And there’s also the option of painting the wood so that it matches or complements the color scheme of the rest of the office.
